Need some assistance

ETA: Three volunteers on the case shortly. Shaddyr, if you see this, don't do any more non-drabble Gutter archiving til we talk, okay?

I'm not entirely clear on the actual details or situation yet, but there is an (apparently) young new author on one of the lists that feeds the Sandlot archive who may be, on the generous end, borrowing a bit too much from another author, and on the non-generous end, plagiarising.

I've lived through this one before, and those of you who have been with me that long, I'll have another post about *that* situation real soon now. Anybody out here in Starsky and Hutch fandom?. It's very time consuming to check out and handle a plagiarism case. And unfortunately for me, I am working 7 days a week, 12-14 hours a day. There's no way I can investigate this properly, and the author in question has four other fics on the Sandlot already. I need a volunteer who is willing and able to review those four fics and try to rule out any wrongdoing in them -- there haven't been any accusations against those four. The fic in question has not been archived yet at the Sandlot, so I can hold that aside until there is time for me to properly contact the 'author' and see what's going on in her head, but I'd prefer to know about the other stories before I do that.

Yeah, vague, I know, but I don't want to try and convict anyone when I haven't even *read* any of the stories in question yet. The potentially plagiarized author is aware of the situation and remarkbly mature and copacetic about the whole thing, so I feel fairly comfortable in taking some time to check it out properly. My gut feel on this is that we've got a young'un who doesn't know her manners yet, which will either mean a rapid resolution or a very ugly scene, if there turns out to be a real problem.

I'm babbling. To summarize: Anyone out there willing to check these stories out for me and see if they're stolen, borrowed, or all-clear? Reply here, because I am sneaking at work and can't get to email from work at all.

Sigh.

(yes, I should be in VA with my family celebrating Rosh Hashanah, but I am instead working nonstop, so I might as well try to get this rolling while I am still here.)

I'd be willing to give them a read.

Thanks, my dear. You should be receiving an email from my work mail account soon with a link to her stuff in the Sandlot. I've received a copy of the report that went to Gutter mods, so I have all the evidence I need on the one that stands accused (and isn't on the Sandlot currently).

I see I have a handful of volunteers here - I'll send the link to all three of you and edit this post :-)

I am beginning to think that during the next writercon we will have to create an institution that investigates plagiarism and deals with it...

I would offer, but I am a little sick of the whole thing and don't want to stand out us a plagiator Slayer...

Oh hon, I wouldn't dream of asking you. Once through the mill is enough. What's honestly scary is that the whole Spiketara thing prompted me to go back and follow up on the last plagiarist I had to out, and there's new stuff that I need to investigate. Sigh. I dunno if I want to get Writercon involved, but if this continues, some kind of an organization might be needed.

I can help -- work is slow today.

I can't get to the Gutter, but I can get to Spike's Salvation through the firewall.

You got it! (scuze the cut and paste -- FL & MS Medicaid are spiraling out of control at the moment...)

My sympathies
Actually, more like empathy. Been in this position, myself, with regard to my duties as an admin at the Babble Board. It isn't fun, and if there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

With regard to the suggestion about forming a group at WriterCon, a stephenbooth_uk posted, in relation to Estepheia's recent trials and tribulations (I think at the journal for T/S fic) that there is a group called Watchlist, which has already been formed for the purpose of monitoring fanfic for plagiarism. The person making the recommendation said Watchlist had been helpful in a case where his own work had been plagiarized I haven't used them, so don't know, but if you'd like more information, here's their URL: http://www.sgn2000.net

Re: My sympathies
*hugs*

Thanks for the pointer, Margot. The case doesn't seem terribly cut and dried, so I don't necessarily want to bang all the war drums yet, especially with the original author saying publically and loudly that she doesn't want a big deal made. This one may be best dealt with quietly, unless something more egregious than what's already turned up comes to light.

I'm really uncomfortable in the role of honesty police -- if this trend gets any worse, it'd be enough for me to start looking for someone to take over the sandlot altogether.

5 years later, and I still feel the same way. Ya think I'm in the wrong profession?
