Back to school...

Sigh. When did school change so that it starts a full month before summer is over??? The best part of summer, at that. It makes me a bit sad that the boys won't ever understand what I mean when I talk about how the smell of August disappearing into September makes me think...

But no time for meandering tonight.

Just a quick note to the world: Writercon 2004 is a reality. If you want to have a say in when it takes place next year, head on over to writercon and vote in the poll. We'll close it out in the next day or two and go public, so speak up while you can!

Hasta manyanas (or something like that)

Aww, August isn't that bad, Chris. My elementary school started the year in...brace yourself...mid-July. No, that wasn't a typo. And the school had no air-conditioning. Summers there had foggy mornings and sweltering afternoons, so we had the choice of wearing shorts and freezing to death in the mornings, or wearing long pants and just about dying in the afternoon. Ah, memories.

You're in LA, aren't you? I did my student teaching there on a year-round calendar. And really, I don't mind the year-round nearly as much as I do this truncated traditional calendar. When we were in VA, older son was on a year-round schedule and started the year July 31, just 5 days sooner than he's starting here. The difference being the 'breaks' between quarters in the year round calendar. Here, there are no new breaks introduced with the extremely (3 weeks or more) early start. Just random workdays and weird days off for the kids that you can't *do* anything with except find childcare... As a student, parent, and former teacher, I adore the year-round concept, and I HATE this version of traditional with every fiber of my being--all the downside and none of the upside, not to mention that it really prevents the notion of year-round from ever happening.

Gee. Guess I'm a little bitter.

OH! And I got your lovely email. I am still 'aww...ing', and intend to respond soon!
