Let us sell your soul....

So many of you are writers, and I'm here to ask you to auction yours(elf, ervices) off to the highest bidder in a writerly auction to be held over the course of April on behalf of Writercon scholarships.

Over the next six weeks, we'll be soliciting assistance in many ways from folks, but this one is my very, very favorite. Funds raised via this particular project will be applied exclusivelyto scholarship attendance at Writercon, and we'll be keeping the books public so that everyone can see where the money is going. As a state nonprofit corporation, also applying for federal 501c3 status, we've got to keep the books very open anyway, and I don't want there to be any unanswered questions about where the money goes or how it's being used.

At this point, we're hoping to send about 20 writers to Las Vegas using our efforts, at an average cost per writer of about $350 (individual requests have varied, and the only requirement for application and award is that the applicant be an active contributor to fandom, as demonstrated by fic, betaing, vidding, artwork, or other creative endeavor). That includes badge, hotel, and transportation. We won't make names public unless the applicants themselves choose to 'come out', and there's *no* request from Writercon that anyone do so.

As the month draws to an end, so will scholarship applications for writercon. I'm not great with sales pitches, and my sense of humor is...not exactly overwhelming. So I'm going to speak from my heart here. The scholarship program at Writercon is my personal baby. It means as much to me as having Writercon be cross-cultural, Whedon fandom-wise. Maybe even more.

I'm a huge supporter of campaigns that raise funds for charities in the names of stars, and I'm an even *bigger* supporter of all that campaigns like saving_angel are doing. And it encourages me to think that we're also capable of supporting fandom itself with our generosity.

So won't you comment here or send an email letting me know you'd like to offer your soul for sale?

Although I *swear* we started working on this plan many weeks ago, the concept is similar to the vidder auction mentioned in sockkpuppett's journal yesterday: You write the ad for what you're willing to auction off (anything you're comfortable with is fair game -- see mintwitch's journal for some examples, we set a time limit on bidding, and the winner of the auction makes a donation to writercon, while you deliver the goods. In the very end, a writer gets to come to Las Vegas who otherwise couldn't!

Many, many thanks (and yes, there will be other ways to contribute besides this auction, if you're not comfy with this concept) for your help, or your support. Feel free to pass the word that we're looking for volunteers!
