Can I curse at LJ?

'Cause I really, really, really want to. Some dumb f*c* has hacked into the site on day 2 of its being live. All the techies can tell me tonight is that someone tried to upload 100MB file 14 times...

FU## FU@@ FU#@

I don't even know what to do. Site is, of course, backed up, but they could suspend me permanently for this. Sigh.

Anybody out there know more than I do about how this kind of thing works?

That act of tech vandalism is revolting, and wrong, and just....wrong. You and your merry crew did such an amazing job, and now this?

I'm so sorry. Hope the host-people are understanding, and hope that there's Anya-style vengeance on the perpetrators.

I'm a bad replier, but been a little busy. Thanks, Lori, for the vibes. Karma will win out.

Wish I had some helpful info about stopping spam-bombs, but I don't. I do think that a responsible host should, instead of blaming the victim, have anti-bombing procedures as standard in their package. Sigh.

Very very sorry for you guys and all the hard work you've put into the Sandlot. :-(

Magpie, I didn't take the time before to reply to this because your info was so good it kept me *very* busy. Thank you a million times over!

I am really very glad I could help.

Chris, I am so sorry this happened -- is there any way they can find the ISP number the files were originating from? There should be some type of signature on the file location or the script itself. It might take them a few days, but if they can trace it, you should be able to raise hell with the culprit's ISP.

There's got to be a way to prevent this from happening. I'll check with some of my security techies and see if they can offer any suggestions.

Thanks Caro! Any words of wisdom are *most* welcome. I've identified most of the holes at this point, and am plugging away. The site's up again, so yay that, but I'm scared off the admin interface for a little while until I can get all those pages protected with passwords & some level of audit. I don't think this will happen again -- the host's tolerance is worn *very* thin right now. Can't say I blame them.

Forget raising hell with an ISP, isn't this type of vandalism fall under some sort of action requiring a district attourney? Hang in there, Chris. The archive rocks. This is only a little hurdle in the road. :hugs:

Thanks a million jillion! If we don't succeed thoroughly tonight, I'll come hollering. In fact, I may come hollering anyway. :-)

Chris - curse away cause I'm cursing too. And hoping that the fleas of a thousand camels infest this low lifeform's body and that the teeth rot and the hair becomes infested with lice before falling completely off. Though that's not enough!
Love you and I'm sure the site will be back up soon.
Chen wishing she really was Chenyanka now
