Requiem for a Master

I wish I had the proper words for it. Missed about a week of "the real world" having a wonderful time at Miss Kimi's wedding, and came back to the news that Andre Norton has died. I haven't the words to express my sadness at this passing...

Send up some wishes to speed her way, eh?

No other modern author has influenced me more, I think.

*hugs you*

I'm glad you didn't know to tell me. This weekend shouldn't have been depressed in any way -- it was all about quiet joy and family and friends. It was wonderful, wonderful to visit with you in a more relaxed atmosphere than the traditional convention...

I remember being in the audience when the late Roger Zelazny was accepting one of his many well-deserved HUGO awards at that years WorldCon (whatever year that was). He thanked the many writers who had influenced him in his youth, Andre Norton being one of them.

I grew up reading Norton's work in ACE doubles. Her Witch World series was very influential on my earliest attempts at writing, as a pre-teen. I was at a conference about 18 months ago, and was delighted to hear from her publishers that she was collaborating with another author, though they admitted that the collaboration was necessary mainly due to her failing health.

Another note, along with C. L. Moore and James Tiptree, Jr., Alice Mary Norton had to adopt a masculine or genderless psuedonym in order to get her work published, a concept that seems unthinkable to most of us today.

Rest in peace, dear lady, with deepest thanks for so many, many wonderful stories.

Aye...Zelazny himself makes the top five list, I think.

So very much of my childhood and adolescence were spent in Andre Norton's capable hands -- I literally cannot imagine what sort of person, never mind writer, I would be without her works in the world.

Thanks for remembering with me. I read the Elvenbane etc. books with the co-authors and quite enjoyed them. It's nice to think that there might be yet another work of her imagination coming still...

(and hey! good to 'see' you again!!)
