Star Trek fandom loses one of the greats

I received this today from a Sime~Gen list I'm on, and am reposting here with permission:

In mid-April 2004, Shirely Maiewski, long time head of the Star Trek Welcommittee passed away. She was very ill, in her 80's, and it was not unexpected. Many of us were able to send her some words of good cheer in her last days, but it was still a major shock that we lost her so quickly. Her passing marks the turning point of an era.

As the announcement went out on the grapevine, Karen MacLeod launched a special Shirley Maiewski Tribute page in her online 'zine, Companion In Zeor. Many fans are sending in contributions to that page in remembrance of Shirley.

Then it was suggested that Shirley would be a perfect subject for a segment of A&E's Biography.

Details, updates and how to send in your tribute can be found at:

Live Long and Prosper,
Jacqueline Lichtenberg

Oh, no--Chris, thank you for posting this. I actually met her once, very briefly, and this news makes me sad on several levels.

Nods. The old guard, without a doubt. There's something truly special about the original fandom, and the men and women who populate it.

Fuck. I knew Shirley back in the day when I was just a young neo-fan -- she's one of two people who really introduced me to the world of fan fic. That was over twenty-five years ago and with moves and lives and changes of fandom, I lost touch with her.

It's sad to hear.
